Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Detainees at NYC’s jails missed over 8,000 medical appointments in February, according to data released by public defenders–compared to over 1,000 the same time last year. That’s despite a court order back in December to fix the problem, which the Department of Corrections blames on staffing issues. (New York City Patch)
- New York City is running an ad campaign in Florida, promoting the city as being LGBTQ+ friendly, after the southern state passed its “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which prohibits teachers from discussing sexuality or gender in classrooms with few exceptions. Just weeks ago the Mayor came under fire for his appointment of allegedly anti-LGBTQ individuals to positions in his administration. (New York City Patch)
- The city’s unemployment rate is nearly double that of the nation, at 7.6% compared to 3.8%. The rate for Black New Yorkers is particularly high, standing at 11.6%. (New York City Patch)
- A Starbucks “Reserve” location in The Meatpacking District voted to unionize on Friday, after first filing paperwork in February. In a statement, union representatives denounced the company’s management for allegedly using anti-union tactics, such as holding one-on-one employee meetings. (New York City Patch)
- A huge 20-plus story development project in Astoria, Queens first proposed in 2011 may now be in the works, according to recent planning documents. The development was approved after a long review process started in 2014. (New York City Patch)
