Three men are dead — including a Safe Streets worker — and a fourth man was injured in a quadruple shooting Wednesday night in east Baltimore, police said.Earlier in the evening, City Councilman Antonio Glover, D-District 13, told 11 News that as many as four people were shot.Police later said officers were called around 7:25 p.m. to the 2400 block of East Monument Street for a ShotSpotter alert.Police said officers found four men who were shot, including a 28-year-old man who died at the scene. Paramedics took two other men to hospitals. A 24-year-old man and another man died. According to the mayor’s office, one of the victims who died was a Safe Streets East worker.A fourth victim, a 27-year-old man, is expected to survive, police said. “An exceptional man. They all were exceptional men,” said one woman who did not want to be identified. “When I had nothing, they made sure I ate, they made sure I had money in my pocket when I had nothing. When they come around now, they congratulate me that they are proud of me, and I was proud of them. It’s just unfortunate.”She said she grew up with the victims and came to the scene to put up a memorial. The resident told 11 News one man was known in the neighborhood as “Nut,” another as “T.J.” the Safe Streets worker killed is DaShawn McGrier.McGrier talked to 11 News outside the courthouse after former Baltimore police officer Arthur Williams was sentenced for assaulting him. That incident was caught on cellphone video. Yvette Wims talked with 11 News about what McGrier meant to the neighborhood.”He leaned over and died; he was so young. He was one of the Safe Street workers, good young man, cleaned up in the neighborhood. They had a brotherhood where they would work together to change things out here,” Wims said. The scene was blocked off in the 2400 block of Monument Street between Montford and Milton avenues.”I can’t explain exactly the circumstances, all I know is that our community is hurting right now. Families are crying right now. You know, I see what they see, I feel what they feel and I understand it. But at the end of the day, we’re losing individuals right here in east Baltimore,” Glover told 11 News at the scene. In July, Safe Streets Cherry Hill outreach worker Kenyell Wilson was shot and killed, and in May, Safe Streets worker Dante Barksdale was shot multiple times and died. Safe Streets workers aim to prevent violence by mediating disputes in the community.Mayor Brandon Scott released a statement late Wednesday night, saying: “Baltimore, enough is enough. What happened tonight was a horrific tragedy. We cannot and will not allow violence to continue to plague our city. Our Safe Streets workers put their lives on the line day in and day out because they believe in a better future for our city — a future we all should believe in. I ask that we keep the loved ones of those we lost tonight in our thoughts and pray that the person in critical condition pulls through. If you know anything that may help us make an arrest in this case, say something.”Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP. “We are heartbroken and angered by the news that another one of our own, a member of the Safe Streets family, was tragically taken from us during tonight’s quadruple shooting in East Baltimore. We lost a brother, a villager, who was doing his job and nothing more. We must do better,” Shantay Jackson, director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, said in a statement. “Please keep the family, our outreach workers and site staff in your thoughts. In the wake of this devastating loss, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement will focus on providing support to the family and our frontline staff, including grief counseling and familial supports. This is a reminder of the courageous, yet dangerous job our frontline staff does each day when working with those at the highest risk of being a shooter or the victim of a shooting.”Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said in a statement: “Tonight’s incident was a tragic event. Safe Street workers mediate the very types of conflicts we saw tonight. All the Safe Streets workers are to be applauded for their work in reducing gun violence and promoting a message of redemption and peace to the many young people of our city. We are dedicating every available resource to finding and apprehending the cowardly perpetrators of this act.”

BALTIMORE —
