MINNEAPOLIS — The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the four-day MIAC Championships securely in third place after turning in nine more swims worthy of All-MIAC or all-conference honorable mention on Saturday.
The Knights finished with 590 points, pulling away from rival St. Olaf in the battle for third place. Gustavus Adolphus won the 24th team title in program history, followed by Saint John’s at 731 points. The Oles totaled 410 points with Macalester (220 points) and Hamline (64) rounding out the field.
The Knights had at least three swimmers tally points in each event on Saturday.
The scoring started with the1650-yard freestyle. Jamie Willmore (Sr./Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall St. Marks) placed eighth at 16:57.75, more than 22 seconds better than his seed time. Allen Yuan (Sr./Cary, N.C./Raleigh Charter) took 10th place at 17:36.91, smashing his previous best this season by more than 55 seconds. James Marlin (Jr./Houston, Texas/Mickey Leland College Prep) finished 12th at 18:08.19, a 48-second improvement on his seed time, and Byron Jia (So./Minnetonka, Minn./Breck) took 14th at 18:11.16.
The 200-yard backstroke saw both Carl Zhang (Jr./Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Ethan Tun (Fy./Potomac, Md./Landon) earn All-MIAC honorable mention, as the duo placed fourth and sixth, respectively. Zhang swam 1:58.42 during the morning prelims, then took another 2-plus seconds off that time when he touched the wall in the finals at 1:56.09. Tun also improved his time during the finals, finishing in 1:59.03. Parker Johnson (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) added to Carleton’s point total with a 10th-place result at 2:01.97.
Josh Wu (So./Germantown, Wis./Germantown) paced four Knights to score in the 100-yard freestyle. He finished in 46.83 to claim fifth place and earn All-MIAC honorable mention. Ian Scott (So./Seattle, Wash./Garfield) also raced in the “A” final, taking eighth place at 47.96. The consolation final saw Aidan Jalili (Fy./Burlington, Vt./Lawrenceville) edge Sam Glaubitz (So./Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) for 11th place as they posted times of 48.43 and 48.97.
The 200-yard breaststroke saw two more All-MIAC honorable mention performances as Teagan Johnson (Jr./Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) claimed fourth place at 2:09.62 followed by Kevin Chen (Jr./Normal, Ill./Normal Community) at 2:11.28 to secure fifth place. After his long race earlier in the day, Jia captured 10th in the this event with a time of 2:13.95.
With five Knights racing in the “A” and “B” finals, Carleton scored more points than any other team in the 200-yard butterfly. Adam Nik (Sr./Mankato, Minn./Eden Prairie), Sean Smith (Fy./Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee), and Charlie Krajc (Fy./West Hartford, Conn./Conard) finished fourth through sixth with times of 1:57.75, 1:57.92, and 1:59.70, respectively. Collin Eldridge (Fy./Cameron Park, Calif./Union Mine) and Yuan took 12th and 13th at 2:04.64 and 2:04.81.
The competition concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the Knights posted their fifth all-conference relay of the meet. Scott, Jalili, Glaubitz, and Wu combined on a time of 3:10.26 in taking third place.
