NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s swimming & diving team opened the 2022 portion of its season by hosting Gustavus Adolphus College for a dual meet at Thorpe Pool. The Knights won three races but lost the team competition by a score of 175-96.
“This meet was exactly what we were looking for at this point in the season,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “We haven’t had a full meet since early December, and we knew Gustavus would help provide a level of competition where we would need to have big swims and dives.”
Sean Smith (Fy./Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) was first to the wall in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a season-best time of 2:02.99, which was good for a nearly four-second margin of victory.
Ethan Tun (Fy./Potomac, Md./Landon) continued his strong rookie year with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley. He reached the wall in 2:00.80.
The final race of the evening was definitely the most dramatic for both schools. Josh Wu (So./Germantown, Wis./Germantown), Adam Nik (Sr./Mankato, Minn./Eden Prairie), Morgann Rene (So./Singapore, Singapore/United World College Of Southeast Asia), and Carl Zhang (Jr./Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.88 as they out-touched the Gusties quartet by 0.03 second.
