NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster men’s lacrosse team opened its 2022 season with a 9-3 non-conference win over Muskingum at the UPMC Sports Complex at home Saturday afternoon.

“One thing we tell our guys before every game is to have fun, work hard, and play to win,” said head coach Travis Brown. “You do those three things and you are going to be fulfilled at the end of the day, win or lose.”

Titan sophomore Payton Waight (Ithaca, NY / Ithaca) registered a game-high five points, including a game-best three assists and a pair of goals. Waight also tied a team-high with senior Mike Roman (Fort Washington, PA / Germantown Academy) with five ground balls. Roman had a game-high three caused turnovers. Also scoring double-digit goals were junior Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster) and Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, MD / Loyola Blakefield).

Titan sophomore goalkeeper Bradley Green (Landisville, PA / Hempfield) earned a career-high 10 saves in the season-opening win.

“I thought Bradley Green in the cage was phenomenal today,” said Brown. “He commanded this team. He really stepped up, we are proud of him.”

Westminster (1-0) came out the gates with a 4-0 run, each goal scored by a different Titan. First-year Gavin Jones (Henrico, VA / Douglas S. Freeman) scored the first goal of the new season, followed by Mathwin, Waight, and senior Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional). Waight also had the assists on the first two goals. The Titans led 4-0 after one. Muskingum (2-1) scored its first goal with 13:01 on the clock in the second quarter which was later countered by Sentz and Westminster went into halftime up 5-1. Both teams scored twice in the third, however, the Titans sealed the win with two more goals in the fourth.

The Titans are back in action Saturday, March 5 at Mount Union. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
